Exam Question
Exam Question:
“Realism is a vital component of television drama”. To what extent does an analysis of your television close-study products support this view? [25 marks]
In my opinion I believe that realism is a vital component of television to a large extent as audiences are able to form, a personal relationship (Blumler and Katz 1974) with the characters and therefore have emotional bond with the character, meaning they will be caring about what happens to them. This in turn mean shat the show is able to have a successful run as audiences are drawn to the realistic lives of the characters they have a 'relationship' with as they may be able to relate with their current situation..I believe that both the close study products, Capital (2015) and Deutschland 83 (2015) support this view.
In Capital, there are many characters in which the audiences are 'bonded to' due to their realistic narratives in the state-of -the-nation drama. First of all we have Quentina, she is an immigrant who is seeking asylum in the UK and is unofficially working to gain money, hard working warden. This shows realism as it confronts the issue of immigration, many of them are finding it hard to settle and seek asylum, meaning that working illegally is their only choice in order to be secure financially. Many audience member will feel sympathy for Quentina as she is depicted as a hardworking person and needs a place to be safe. Some other audience members may have 'personal identity' as they might have been in the place she was in, as we know London is a culturally diverse place. By having realism it allows the audiences to learn (surveillance) about the immigration crisis. Therefore, realism is a vital component as it allows audiences to be bonded to their characters and learn, it also means that they will continue to watch the show as they would like to see what happens with their character.
Additionally, in Capital, we can see how realism is used because it is based around the financial crisis of 2007. This is represented in Capital though showing the animation of increasing house prices in the pilot episode. In 2008 when the crash happened the house prices in London decreased massively and it was estimated that it would take a long time to recover. However, in 2015,, London's house prices increased rapidly that the average house price was £531,000. many people in the audience could have been able to relate with this as it was a global issue, particularly people in London being able to relate more. This is a component of realism and can be seen as vital as it shows the economical issues that London was facing to audiences are able to get a clear understanding of how it impacted peoples lives in more details. As a result audiences are lured in to see what happens next.
In turn, in Deutschland 83, realism is used as we can see divide of East and West Germany. Martin the protagonist is from East Germany, which was depicted as downgraded compared to the West, which was known to be more wealthy and privileged. The component of realism is depieced through mise-en-scene as it shows the clear divide between both the places. Also, by using real archive footage and drama aspect draws audiences in as it gives them an enticing storyline, which they can both gain pleasure from and learn from. Moreover, it is based on a story, which people would be more curious about and would want to find out more about. Deutschland 83 was a successful period drama globally.
In conclusion, I believe that realism is a vital component of television to a large extent as audiences are able to form, a personal relationship (Blumler and Katz 1974) with the characters and therefore have emotional bond with the character, meaning they will be caring about what happens to them. The component of realism does not solely draw the audiences in to follow their character, but to learn from these situations and how they impacted peoples lives at the time. It becomes an exciting experience for them and means that the shows will me successful in running.
