'Statement of Intent' feedback

Comments on Statement of Intent: ·          There is a good, well thought-out idea here but you perhaps need to consider if it is definitely appropriate for a family audience. You also need to put a few more details at the beginning – title, confirmed TV channel etc. (ITV and C4 are quite different!) ·          Clearly well-planned in terms of trailer structure but you need more in terms of specific shots, sound, mise-en-scene – media language. Be specific: what meanings do you plan to create for the audience? ·          Would a BAME cast help attract a wider audience? Certainly more diverse. This aspect may also link to the channel you select to broadcast it. ·          Try and add some theory to the statement. On that subject, I’m not sure the male/female gaze section works. ·       ...

Preliminary exercise: TV drama scene- Research and planning tasks

1) I have chosen to go with crime. 2) Research: Broadchurch trailer. Voiceover and music. Pace of trailer at the end picks up- creates tension and suspense Narrative is communicated by using many techniques-communicated through the dialogue from a news reporter at the beginning of the trailer stating “the body of an 11 year old child was found…”.Also, the various bits if dialogue such as “we will find who did this”, emphasises the crime aspect, as it shows that they will be searching for the killer.  It also implies how the narrative will be driven forward in each episode as the text on screen says “A town wrapped in secrets” so these ‘secrets’ will be “unravelled in a major 8 part drama”.  By using text on screen lures the audience in as it suggests enigma (Barthes). Moreover, a genre is communicated in various forms, one way is through the mise-en-scene. We are able to identify Broadchurch as Crime Drama because of its plot/storyline.  The opening shot of the...

1) Research: TV drama trailer analysis GENRE: CRIME DRAMA Narrative and genre: Research: TV drama trailer analysis TV drama trailer 1: Narrative and genre-Broadchurch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngsFOWAPTDI Narrative is communicated by using many techniques in Broadchurch’s trailer. One way is by the dialogue. We can see that the narrative in this crime drama is based around the discovery of an 11 year old boy’s body on a beach in a town called ‘Broadchurch’ and the plot is finding out who killed him, in an 8 part series drama. This is communicated through the dialogue from a news reporter at the beginning of the trailer stating “the body of an 11 year old child was found…”.Also, the various bits if dialogue such as “we will find who did this”, emphasises the crime aspect, as it shows that they will be searching for the killer. It also implies how the narrative will be driven forward in each episode as the text on screen says “A town wrapped in secrets” so these ‘secr...

War of the Worlds: Blog tasks

FACTSHEET 176 1) War of the Worlds is a broadcast adapted from H.G Wells' 1898 novel. 2) It was first broadcast on the 30th October 1938 - the myth suggests that audience's reacted dramatically, which made this one of the earliest examples of mass hysteria. 3) The NY Times reported it as "Radio Listeners in Panis, Taking War Drama as Fact" - again highlighting the mass hysteria caused by the hoax broadcast. 4) Schwartz suggests that reportings of the broadcast's impact was not purely exaggerated; he implies that the effect it had was actually an example of a "viral-media phenomenon." He suggests that the show actualy offered a "fascinating window into how users engage with media content, spreading and reinterpreting it." 5) He used hybrid genres in order to heighten the effect that it had on audiences - he combined the conventions of radio broadcasting with the conventions of news and storyteling. By blurring these two toge...
